Diesel cars may not be extremely sought after in the U.S., but VW Of Charlotte says they’re catching on. One diesel vehicle that’s getting plenty of attention is the Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen TDI, which has won praise for its utility, driving dynamics, and well-appointed interior. The experts at Consumer Reports also loved the TDI’s hybrid-like 49 miles per gallon fuel economy.
For the Sportwagen, it was the result of a Consumer Reports test of “fuel-efficient cars” that featured the VW, Ford Fiesta, MAZDA2 and Honda CR-Z. As you might expect, the subcompacts from Ford and Mazda did fairly well in terms of fuel economy, although they still trailed Honda’s hybrid. But it was the bigger and more versatile Jetta Sportwagen that put up the top mark, scoring 36 mpg in the CR’s own testing, including a “superb 49 mpg on the highway.”
