Toyota Experiments With ‘Ready To Race’ Tacoma

Toyota Tacoma X-Runner RTR imageLast month at the SEMA show, Toyota wanted to highlight production parts from Toyota Racing Development (TRD). But rather than show off parts individually, the automaker assembled the X-Runner RTR, a Tacoma that’s infused with “go fast” goodies.

Packing a supercharger kit from Toyota Racing Development (TRD), that mighty mill pours out 504 hp and 550 lb.-ft. of torque, and is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift mode. To help get that power to the pavement, engineers relied on a stock Tundra rear axle (narrowed 5.7 inches to match the Tacoma’s rear-track width) boasting a 4.3 ratio and 10.5-inch ring gear. Also in the mix here is an Eaton-designed, TRD-prototype mechanical limited-slip differential.
