“Park Your Toyota” Says U.S. Transport Chief

by Auto in the News on February 3, 2010

First Toyota halted the sales of eight popular models as the recall for sticking accelerator problems put the safety of these vehicles into question. Now it seems that the U.S. government wants Toyota owners to stop driving altogether.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood suggested that owners of recalled Toyota models should stop driving their vehicles and immediately seek a Toyota dealer. The suggestion we given before a House committee currently investigating the sweeping recalls.

Following his testimony, LaHood will be speaking with Toyota President Akio Toyoda today concerning the recall fiasco. LaHood has also confirmed that electrical problems are also being investigated by the government in addition to mechanical defects.

Update: LaHood quickly admitted that his previous statement was inappropriate. Many consumers such as Toyota Woburn express lube, for example, have not witnessed issues with their vehicles that are as grave as LaHood’s comments suggests, and it’s is important for all consumers to be cautious and but to not buy into the negative hype surrounding theses important recalls. Although LaHood misspoke, the PR catostrophe will unforunately not go away overnight. Until then, Fredericksburg used Honda dealers agree that the will have a huge impact on import sales. Luckily, they say, Honda is a brand that has an untarnished record for quality and safety.
