Automotive technology has come a long way in recent years, and technologies that were once the subject of sci-fi movies are now quickly becoming a reality. One of the biggest trends being addressed by multiple automakers and third-party technology companies are the advancements in mobile applications. Already consumers have plenty of data and information at their fingertips, but soon drivers will have even more control in regard to accessing information as well as controlling the car itself.
Thanks to the prevalence of satellite navigation and Bluetooth technology, in-car data and communications are more advanced than ever before. The widespread adoption of smartphones and bustling mobile application development also continues to fuel added functionality. As a result, it will soon be commonplace for cell phones to control the radio, check engine status, help locate your car, and much much more.
Mercedes mbrace
Premium car buyers have premium demands and technology is increasingly factoring into purchase decisions in this segment. Not one to fall behind the popular trends, Mercedes-Benz has introduced mbrace, an all-new application for the Apple iPhone or the BlackBerry. Developed by Hughes Telematics, the application will help drivers locate their Mercedes in a busy parking lot, track the vehicle in the event it gets stolen, and it even unlocks the doors if the driver has their hands full. Mercedes promises that new functionality will eventually be added, with real-time traffic data among the features to be added soon. The system works with any Mercedes-Benz vehicle for a subscription fee of $280 per year. For added features, buyers can choose the mbrace PLUS for $520 per year.
Ford Sync
One of the best in-car infotainment systems on theĀ market is Sync. Developed by Ford and Microsoft, the system gives drivers the ability to control a wide range of functions completely hands-free. As more automakers are looking to license Microsoft’s software, or develop similar software elsewhere, Ford is now opening their system up to third-party developers. Just as third-party developers have helped make the iPhone even more popular and robust, Ford is hoping to get the same boost. Already Ford has shown off the new system with exciting new applications such as the popular music streaming application from Pandora.
General Motors OnStar
OnStar is available on over 50 GM models, making this system one of the most popular systems for in-vehicle security, communications, and vehicle diagnostics. Although the OnStar system has been around for many years, it will soon be receiving all-new functionality including compatibility with smartphones. With the launch of the Chevrolet Volt this year, the OnStar application will become available for the Droid, iPhone, and BlackBerry phones. The new app will allow drivers to check battery charging status, fuel-economy history, and even remind drivers to plug-in their vehicle when it needs charging. According to OnStar president Walt Dorfstatter, the Volt will usher in a “new era of automotive technology,” and this new control and connectivity will be needed to match.
