Goodbye Hummer

by Auto in the News on April 14, 2010

With the increasing fuel-efficiency of light-weight crossover SUV’s, Hummer is having a very difficult time competing. In fact, last month GM sold fewer than 300 Hummers. So while this image looks pretty cool, think of it this way: Hummer is literally going down. Quite unfortunate, but the picture sums it up. Nose dive.

GM planned to sell Hummer to Chinese truck maker Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machines Co., but the deal fell through in February. While Hummer is still looking for other offers, they are still moving forward in shutting down the brand.

“We have since considered a number of possibilities for Hummer along the way, and we are disappointed that the deal with Tengzhong could not be completed,” said John Smith GM vice president of corporate planning and alliances. “GM will now work closely with Hummer employees, dealers and suppliers to wind down the business in an orderly and responsible manner.”

Dealers have been informed that “we are winding down Hummer,” GM spokesman Nick Richards said. Some 150 Hummer dealers in the United States and about 250 in other countries were notified them of the “dissolution of the dealership network,” he added.

Huge rebates are being offered by Hummer on select models, according to CNNMoney.com. When we say huge deals, we mean HUGE! How about $6,000 rebates on the 2009 Hummer H2 full-sized SUV and the 2009 H3 mid-sized SUV?

2009 H2

2009 H3

Or $5,000 rebates on the 2009 Hummer H3T?

2009 H3T

Or $4,000 rebates on the 2010 H3T?

2010 H3T

Act quickly, because these deals wont last forever!
