Ford Mustang GT Breaks Speed Record

Ford Racing Mustang GT imagePiloted by David Ragan, a 2011 Ford Mustang GT recently set a half-mile speed record for a production car. The Mustang, equipped with a Ford Racing supercharger, completed a lap at 98.497 miles per hour in just 19.481 seconds. Those numbers were enough to break the last record, held by a Yamaha Superbike.

As for Ford’s new half-mile hero, it came off the assembly line fitted with standard GT performance enablers like the Blue Oval’s new 5.0-liter V8. Boasting twin independent variable valve timing, an aluminum block and cold-air induction system, the powerplant is good for 412 hp and 390 lb.-ft. of torque. But it wasn’t quite good enough for Ford Racing. So, the performance group also added a Ford Racing Whipple supercharger kit that helped the engine unleash another 212 horses, a Ford Racing FR3 handling pack and a Brembo brake kit for added stopping power.
