Ford’s long national nightmare is finally over: After 12 long years, the company has once again bested General Motors—and now leapfrogged Toyota—to win a monthly sales battle.
February sales for the Blue Oval were up an amazing 43 percent in February as compared to the same month in 2009, with Lincoln seeing a sales increase of 19 percent, Mercury rising 24 percent and the Ford division proper doing most of the heavy lifting, notching a 46 percent increase of its own. Even Volvo was up 38 percent.
Among the individual models with the most impressive February performances were the Ford Fusion, which rang up a 116.5 percent sales gain; the new Ford Taurus, achieving a sales boost of 93.3 percent; and the Mercury Milan, with sales up 99.6 percent. And while the volume of vehicles involved was noticeably smaller, sales of the Volvo V50 jumped 96.9 percent, while the Volvo XC60 and Volvo C70 were both up more than 180 percent.
Also significant were the sales results for Ford’s crossovers. Competing in some of the industry’s quickest growing, most hotly contested market segments, Ford Escape sales went up by 50.2 percent and the Ford Edge grew sales by 66.7 percent. Significantly, the Edge also broke into the month top-20 bestsellers list and received a nice facelift for 2011, all of which bodes well for the vehicle’s future success.
As for the company as a whole?
According to Ken Czubay, Ford vice president, U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service, “We have even more new products and fuel-efficient powertrains coming this year, and we expect our progress to continue.”
