Thanks to Toyota’s sweeping recalls, new light was shed on the issue of unintended acceleration. As the issue is not entirely black and white, it has proved not only to be a complex issue but also one that has been plaguing the auto industry for years.
In hopes of finding a solution to the cause of unintended acceleration in Toyota and other vehicles, Edmunds.com has just announced that they will provide any individual or group with $1 million if they are able to decipher the issue’s cause.
“Consumers need to feel confident that the vehicles that they drive are as safe as possible,” said Edmunds.com CEO Jeremy Anwyl. “We look forward to seeing the safety contributions that this effort generates.”
Although Toyota has received the brunt of the scrutiny over unintended acceleration, Edmunds.com was quick to point out that all automakers have received complaints about this issue.
While rules for the prize are still being finalized, Edmunds.com wants to see a demonstration in a controlled environment where a repeatable factor that will cause an unmodified new vehicle to accelerate suddenly and unexpectedly.
