Consumer Poll: Top Brands for EVs, PHEVS

by Auto in the News on May 17, 2010

What’s the best way for generating feedback? Surveys. Why? It is imperative to know what the consumer is thinking. So, what have we learned from recent surveys?
A recent survey taken on 1,600 consumers questioned, “From whom would you be most likely to purchase an EV”? The term EV includes a battery-electric car or an extended-range plug-in hybrid using both an electric motor and an internal combustion engine.

The results were surprising, very surprising! Aside from us already knowing that automotive purchases are driven by a brand’s reputation and the company’s position in the market, we found that Toyota, Honda, and Ford all have the advantage over the competitors as shown in the graph; meaning the likelihood of success for these three companies is higher than the rest.

This survey was very surprising, actually, for Nissan and Chevrolet. Chevrolet has created a lot of buzz, or so we thought, for the Volt extended-range plug-in hybrid, yet the company was only picked by 8 percent. Nissan, on the other hand, is set to launch the world’s first battery-electric vehicle, the Leaf, and yet it was only picked by 4 percent of the study.

What does this mean for Nissan and Chevrolet with the upcoming release of the Leaf and Volt? These companies are going to need to increase the awareness and education of these two models for them to make a splash. Sounds like the marketing team is going to have their work cut out for them!

Good luck to every company entering the very competitive electric vehicle stage, they might need it!
