French automaker Citroen has created some pretty unusual concept cars in the past, but its latest may be one of its most futuristic.

The Taranis Concept is designed to be a sporty off-roader, but it resembles a Transformer more than an automobile. It features electric motors on each wheel hub and a double-jointed wheel setup that’s designed to deliver agile handling on any terrain. The wheels also turn in the direction the vehicle is traveling, thereby reducing its turning radius.

The Taranis is strictly a two-seater and it’s equipped with gull-wing doors to add a bit of style, as well as practicality. From the front, it seems the vehicle’s design may have been inspired by inspired by Christopher Nolan’s “Tumbler” Batmobile.

Even the name of this concept is fitting as it may conjures images of either a Tyrannosaurus Rex or a tarantula. However, Citroen says Taranis is the name of a Celtic god who wields thunderbolts — which also seems appropriate.
