The upstart police car manufacturer Carbon Motors is off to a good start. Although their E7 Police Car won’t even enter production until 2012, the company has already surpassed more than 14,000 reservations for the vehicle from law enforcement.
Carbon Motors has been working feverishly to show off the unique benefits of the E7 to local law enforcement agencies and even the federal government, especially considering new police interceptors from Ford, GM, and Chrysler will also be available soon. But perhaps the biggest different between the E7 and other police cars is that the E7 is purpose built from the ground up to be used as a police interceptor.
“Carbon Motors has surpassed 14,000 production slot reservations for the Carbon E7,” the company said in a statement yesterday. “These reservations were made by over 400 law enforcement agencies in 48 US States, representing each functional area of law enforcement. At this rate, Carbon Motors fully expects to have production sold out well in advance of the first vehicle rolling out of the Carbon Campus in Connersville, Indiana.”
The Carbon Motors E7 will be powered by a diesel engine from BMW. The twin-turbocharged diesel unit, which is also used in the BMW X5 xDrive35d and the BMW 335d, will produce 265 horsepower and 425 pound-feet of torque. So far Carbon Motors has ordered 240,000 of these engines from BMW.
