Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon: Cargo Isn’t All it Hauls

by Auto in the News on April 9, 2010

When the Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon first debuted last year, it instantly became a credible option to European tourers like the Audi A6 Avant or BMW 5 Series Sports Wagon. But with the debut of the CTS-V version at this month’s New York International Auto Show, the Cadillac wagon goes from “credible” to “incredible.”

A key factor is the most powerful production engine ever offered in a Cadillac, a cutting-edge supercharged V8 that makes a ridiculous 556 hp and 551 lb-ft of torque. That powerplant kicks the CTS-V sedan from 0-60 in under four seconds, and should do approximately the same for the slightly heavier wagon. But like the rest of the CTS-V family, the Sport Wagon can also straighten out the curves like a hot iron on a wrinkled shirt.

Here the telling difference is Cadillac’s Magnetic Ride Control system, billed as “the world’s fastest-reacting suspension technology.” The system uses a bank of four sensors, one at each wheel, to continuously ascertain road conditions and then adjust the car’s suspension—in just milliseconds—to optimize performance. Of course, Brembo brakes and unique Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires help as well.

The whole package is wrapped in an aggressive V-Series body that adds a unique grille, front fascia, rear spoiler and hood; 19-inch forged aluminum wheels (painted or polished);  large, vertical taillamps; automatic liftgate; optional panoramic sunroof; and a full cargo-management system that helps manage loads both on the vehicle’s roof and in its rear cargo bay.

And as you’d expect, the CTS-V Sport Wagon takes even better care of its occupants than it does its cargo. Interior luxury features include a premium sound system and 40-gig hard drive, an enhanced nav system with a deployable screen, hand-sewn accents throughout, optional Recaro sport seats and the proverbial much much more.

In fact, the only thing customers may miss out on is, well, the car itself. The CTS-V Sport Wagon will have only limited availability when it launches later this year, meaning drivers who want one better follow the car’s example and move fast.

Performance and versatility. It’s a rare combination that always finds demand, and Minneapolis Cadillac is sure the new CTS-V will find plenty of buyers.
